Movember XI vs Parliamentarians at Sky Stadium
On a sunny Sunday in Wellington, the Sky Stadium pitch played host to something a little different from the usual high stakes sporting action we see. The Movember XI took to the field against New Zealand’s Parliamentarians in a charity cricket match with a difference. The cricket was lively, the banter was flowing, and while there was a distinctly competitive spirit to the game, the real win of the day was in the kōrero, the camaraderie, and the shared purpose that played out both on and off the field.
More Than Just a Game
Throughout the day, players, MPs, and supporters mixed easily around the boundary, chatting about sport, life, and the cause that had brought them together.
Movember is more than just a month of moustaches, it has become a global movement aiming to help men live happier, healthier, and longer lives. The charity focuses on three big areas that hit close to home for many Kiwi families: mental health and suicide prevention, prostate cancer, and testicular cancer. The numbers tell a tough story, in Aotearoa too many men, fathers, brothers, and mates are lost to causes that can often be prevented or treated if caught early. Movember works year-round to change that, funding research, community programmes, and local initiatives that encourage men to open up, check in, and take action on their health.
And on this day, it was more than just a game of cricket being played. With all its pauses and quiet moments, the match created that time and space needed for the harder conversations: mental health, checking in with mates, the challenges that come with balancing work, life, and wellbeing. For many, those moments off the pitch were just as meaningful as the ones spent on it.
A Venue with Heart
For us at Sky Stadium, it was a privilege to host the match. Even better to do so on a pitch that had just seen international action and that days later would be home to the Wellington Phoenix. Our grounds team worked quickly to make sure the surface was perfect for both fixtures, and we were proud to lend the space to a cause that means so much to so many.
As a community venue, it’s days like this that remind us what Sky Stadium is here for. While we’re proud to host some of the country’s biggest sporting and entertainment moments, we’re equally proud to provide a space where meaningful events like this can take place. Movember XI may have claimed the win, but everyone involved shared in the bigger purpose behind the match.
There’s still time to support Movember and the important work they’re doing to improve men’s health across Aotearoa. Visit their website here to learn more about local events and initiatives, and find out how you can get involved.
