E-Waste Day Delivers Big Results

A Successful E-Waste Collection Day at Sky Stadium

On Sunday 2 November, the Sky Stadium car park looked a little bit different than normal. Instead of fans arriving for a big game, cars were lined up filled with unwanted electronics, from old laptops, tangled chargers, and aging TVs all ready for a new beginning.

Teaming up with Echo Tech NZ and the Wellington City Council, we hosted a free e-waste collection day in our car park, and the community response was incredible! From early morning right through to afternoon, there was a steady stream of locals keen to do their bit.

As cars rolled through our drive-through drop-off zone, Echo Tech’s friendly team were here onsite helping Wellingtonians every step of the way, from unloading devices, sorting items, and answering question. What could have been landfill-bound waste, was instead transformed into something with purpose.

By the time the last car drove away, the results were something the whole city could be proud of: 23,129 kilograms of e-waste collected in a single day. Out of that, 620 kilograms were set aside by Wellington City Council to be repaired and resold through Sustain Trust’s Te Aro Zero Waste. This event provided an easy way for locals to recycle their unwanted electronics and essentially giving them a second life.

Supporting Our Sustainability Goals

For us, events like this reflect our ongoing commitment to sustainability and waste minimisation at the stadium. After every match, concert, and community event, our dedicated sustainability team gets to work, carefully sorting and managing all event waste right here on-site. We currently separate materials into 15 different waste streams, making sure as much as possible is recycled, composted, or recovered instead of sent to landfill.

Our goal is to divert over 80% of all stadium and event waste away from landfill by working with local recycling and resource recovery partners. And when we see our community show up in force like they did last Sunday, it’s a powerful reminder that every effort counts.

The Community Effort

The success of this e-waste collection day is proof of what’s possible when a community comes together with a shared purpose. With the help of Echo Tech NZ and Wellington City Council, we turned a car park into a hub of positive environmental action. Together, we’re helping create a cleaner, more sustainable Wellington.
